A Job Redundancy Story 📖 One of my most disappointing career experiences was having my role made redundant. I was in a regional role, and I used to work weekends and long hours. I even had to take midnight calls frequently because Australia would always have the worst timeslot compared to colleagues in North America and Europe. However, we had a new CEO, and there were many changes in the global structure. I was one of the heads of regional teams, and my role was affected. It was the first time in my career that I was honestly quite sad. I knew it wasn't me or my work, abilities, or talent, but when you work so hard, a role redundancy could feel like the end of the world. I was placed in an outplacement program for executives, and I had a career coach to help me with my resume and interviewing skills, but there wasn't a role or company that I was interested in. She asked if I wanted to attend a one-day session about entrepreneurship, and a lightbulb went off in my head! My mum has always worked for herself and been self-employed, and I have always been interested in starting my own business as well. I said yes, and the rest is history. Starting my own business, Forestlyn, a program development, marketing, and education company, gave me the freedom and flexibility to do what I wanted. I get to choose who I work with and my own hours. Women are often tasked with caring responsibilities, where flexibility is essential. I am also an Entrepreneur in Residence at a university. I teach other women and multicultural founders how to start their own businesses, which has made my 360-degree journey even sweeter. WOW, I have been recognised as a LinkedIn Top Voice! 🤯 I joined LinkedIn on 18 July 2008. Today, I received the exciting news that I am recognised as a LinkedIn Top Voice! LinkedIn Top Voice is a blue badge that appears on your profile. It is an invitation-only group of experts, and I heard it is awarded to only about 300 professionals each year out of the 1 Billion people on LinkedIn! I am a huge fan of LinkedIn because it has significantly enhanced my professional network by providing a platform to connect globally with industry leaders, clients and hiring managers. It allows me to showcase my skills and achievements, acting as a dynamic digital resume and sales tool that attracts opportunities. In fact, LinkedIn has led me to speaking opportunities, new clients, podcast sponsorships, new jobs, mentorship and even friends in real life! It has also been a fantastic way to build my personal brand and promote my content FOR FREE to millions of people globally. I post around 2-3 times per week, and I’ve learnt that consistently creating quality content is key! How has LinkedIn helped you?
